DJ See

Balam (aka See) known to the Los Angeles underground since the early 90s, is an artist of many names, each forged in a different corner of music and culture. In the rave scene, he’s “See,” a name that started as “Cito,” a family nickname given by his sisters, then shortened by friends to “Cit” (pronounced Seet), and eventually transformed into “SEE.” In 1992, hooked on Gabber and Jungle, he told his sisters, “It’s not a phase… you’ll see.” Decades later, that name has lived on across Hip-Hop, Jungle, and Breakbeat circles.

For house, techno, and trance, Balam steps into the mythic as “Xbalanque,” a name rooted in his Maya ancestry and inspired by years of ethnomycology and psychedelic integration work. That journey, part research, part ceremony, continues to evolve into his upcoming book Tripping on Nature, a tribute to ancestral knowledge and the role sacred fungi play in healing, remembrance, and identity. In gaming circles, he’s “Killah,” a nod to his Junglist past, See, The Soundboy Killah, while in graffiti history he’s remembered as OG Mr Risk One (not to be confused with Risk of PCA/WCA).

With over thirty years in the culture, from working at WP Records to helping organize raves, rocking heavy Jungle at Miami’s Winter Music Conference, and holding it down in underground warehouses and local clubs, Balam embodies the many faces of underground music. Each name is a chapter, each set a new page, and no matter the alias, one truth always remains: when he plays, you’ll be able to see with your eyes closed.
